In observance of World AIDS Day, and in response to a number of requests for mobile testing from student groups, Campus Health Initiatives collaborated with SHS’ Sexual Health Counselor, Erin Taylor, to offer free, walk-in, rapid HIV testing at SHS to eligible students. It was an opportunity to draw new students into the SHS facility and to give them an opportunity to get to know our staff and services. Additionally, it was an excellent way to draw attention to a major public health concern. Too many people don’t know they have HIV. In the United States, nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV, and almost one in five don’t know they are infected. With minimal staff time and resources involved, Student Health was able to test 8 new people for HIV.

This event was held from 10am-3pm on Friday, November 30th. Ashlee Halbritter, the Campus Health Initiatives Health Educator, was available in the conference room for any students who had questions while they were waiting. To make the downtime more informal and comfortable, ESPN’s “The Announcement” was aired. This uses Magic Johnson’s diagnosis to tell a very positive story.
